Switched on Schools Programme Wins Another Top Award

Tuesday 7 Oct 08

Northern Ireland Electricity’s ‘Switched on Schools’ programme has picked up an award for the best use of renewable energy at the Sustainable Ireland Awards.

Switched on Schools, funded in partnership with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Education and Library Boards, has installed solar photovoltaics (PV) and renewable energy streetlights at schools across rural Northern Ireland.

The scheme installed solar panels which convert sunlight into electricity and 25 renewable energy streetlights. It worked with over 40 schools across Northern Ireland to fit this type of renewable technology, bringing down energy bills and reducing their carbon footprint. The programme’s dedicated website (www.switchedonschools.co.uk) is also helping pupils to understand about renewable energy and helps them to monitor their solar PV system online.

“We’re delighted that Switched on Schools has received recognition from the Sustainable Ireland Awards. The programme has shown that there is real potential for renewable energy in Northern Ireland and that our schools are perfect pioneers for this type of renewable energy technology,” said Gwyneth Scott, NIE Energy.
